THE PROJECT
Layman's ReportThe present document constitutes the Layman’s Report drafted as part of PROJECT LIFE+ ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AND GOVERNANCE “More Reusing and More Recycling” - LIFE 08-ENV/IT437. The project was assigned and financed by the European Commission to the Regione Lazio DipartimentoTerritorio - Assessorato all’Ambiente e allo Sviluppo Sostenibile (Coordinator/ Beneficiary), Provincia di Rieti (Beneficiary), Università di Roma La Sapienza Facoltà di Ingegneria - Dipartimento di Meccanica e Aerospaziale (Beneficiary), Nova Consulting (Beneficiary), SDIe (Beneficiary). The project addresses the many problems associated with unsustainable use of natural resources and the issue of waste-management. The flow of materials and energy generated by our socioeconomic system needs to be drastically cut down in order to fulfil objectives coherent with the principles of sustainable growth. The project is focussed on manufacture, considered here in terms of possible uses for production waste and refuse. This means reducing the volume of waste destined to disposal, through the improvement of waste sorting schemes and the enhancement of those productive chains which can absorb recycled waste and use it to manufacture new products and/or materials out of secondary raw materials (SRM). The project sees the participation of two areas situated within the administrative Italian region of Lazio: the province of Rieti and the Castelli Romani area, in the southern end of the province of Rome. These two areas share certain similarities, such as a strong agricultural vocation and a commitment towards environmental welfare. Life + More&More ProjectThe project More Reusing & More Recycling (Mo.re & Mo.re), coordinated by the Lazio Region and co-funded by the European Commission through the Life+ Programme, aims at enhancing the reuse and the recycling of solid waste. This is obtained by establishing an innovative methodology in two defined territories: the Castelli Romani area and the Province of Rieti. Features of unquestionable innovation are, on the one hand, the on-line trading platform for secondary raw materials that are potentially available in the Lazio Region and, on the other hand, the dynamic map that monitors the supply and demand trends of particular types of waste. Thanks to these two instruments the economic operators of the territory are made possible to share the outputs of recycling activity and thus contributing to the reduction of environmental impact due to waste management.
